UPDATE: You are all so kind and thoughtful. thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Gabbie

My 7 year old daughter has a neurological disorder called Nuerofibromatosis. It is a rare genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow anywhere on her body. It also causes developmental delays and behaviors similar to autistic children. As you can imagine, she has a hard time with social interactions and making friends. In the past couple weeks she has come very upset about the lack of friendships, noting that lately kids have been given out cards, but not to her. I am assuming that they are invitations to parties she is not invited too. She said through tears, "Mom, why don't I ever get cards?"

So, She would love it. There are some things that money cannot buy, and that is feeling like you are loved and accepted. That is what I want for my baby girl. Thank you.

  • A Book for Gabbie by Keith and Al Toney
We saw your story on the Today show and were very moved by Gabbie feeling left out. We have published a diversity and anti-bullying children's story book that we are sending to her. Our book has helped many kids see the importance of being kind to everyone, and also helps kids feel more comfortable about their differences and how those differences become assets.

I know this Mom, we used to work together. When she and I first met we later talked about how we both felt like, "Ahhhh, finally a Mom who loves their kids as much and I love mine!" I remember when she was pregnant with Gabbie. I can speak honestly when I tell you this woman is absolutely amazing. She is a gift from God to everyone she meets. Kandra, even through all these trials I have no doubt that you are doing the best you can and are making all the right decisions for Gabbie. You are well trained in behaviors and are very creative! This is an amazing outpouring for you!! Sit back and watch the love machine at work!!

    Gabby,
I had a neurological condition called epilepsy. I can relate to the feelings of not feeling accepted, but I am now finding out that those people I thought disliked me actually have great respect for me overcoming my disability. Through God all things are possible. I am sure that you are a very loving and caring person and that is what matters most.

My dearest Gabbie (by the way I LOVE that name), your story broke my heart. As like you, I have NF. It is no fun is it? I understand how it makes you feel different. But sweetheart, don't let it get you down. Let it empower you, let it lead you to make a change in the world. Though I hate having NF, I honestly think it has made me a nicer person (sounds strange doesn't it?). The type I have is the best to have medically, but not for appearances. So I understand why you feel so sad. Some people are just mean and cruel. So please smile sweetheart, you have such a pretty smile. Wishing you a heartfelt Merry Christmas.

  • Love from Louisiana :) by Erin Thigpen
I have 2 sons ages 7 and 9. I told them about Gabbie and they were upset and angry that she has not been invited to any parties and that other children choose not to be friends with her. My oldest went through many tests when he was almost 2 b/c they thought he was autistic, but ended up diagnosing him with Developmental Delay which he has had several therapies and evaluations since so I know how it feels to be a mother of a child other children have trouble relating to. He said he wants to make friends with Gabbie and wants her to come to his birthday party (will be 10 in couple weeks). I know we're all the way in Louisiana, but you and your family are always welcome :)They are excited about making their cards to send to her :)Hope she likes them :)

  • Card for Gabbie by Laura F. in Portland OR
    Hi Gabbie,

It's almost Christmas, and it is such an exciting time of year. I wish you a very Happy Holiday. It's really hard when the other kids don't give you cards.I know that it probably makes you feel really sad inside.
Don't feel bad that you don't get cards from them. You have friends all over the world and they don't! This makes you a very special and lucky girl. Don't pay any attention to them Gabby, because you are loved by many people. I am one of those people who cares about you. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season.

Merry Christmas Gabbie. Everyone is special in thier own way. I hope your teacher has taken time to let you tell your class what issues you have and how you need support as you go forward. Sometimes sharing these things cn break down barriers and help others to understans what you are going through. Each of us has a "special something" about them. Maybe they are artistic, maybe they are good with words. What ever is your special thing be sure to share with others and let them know you are wonderful too. Since we all know you are special let the world know and have a very Merry Christmas and God bless you and your mother. We all care.

  • Awesomeness in action! by Kori Miller
We teach our children always to invite everyone. It's not easy to sit back and watch as year after year (at their new school), few of the children in their classes accept the invitations. We celebrate those who do. I'm truly sorry that your daughter is experiencing pain at the hands of those around her. Perhaps those at her school will stand up and take notice now. Tell Gabbie that I know she's awesomeness in action. She's inspired complete strangers to stand up and take notice. That's not easy.

  • Merry Christmas Beautiful by Heather Headrick
    Gabbie,
Hello Beautiful! I wanted to wish you a wonderful and blessed Christmas. You are such a beautiful and special little girl and you're so lucky to have a mommy like you do. I wanted to tell you something that my Papaw Roy told me all the time when I was a little girl. I want you to remember it always. "People are always gonna talk might at well give 'em something to talk about. Love your smile. Love your heart. Love your soul. Love you!" You always remember that YOU CAN DO ANYTHING THAT YOUR HEART DESIRES! Don't let the negative actions or words of others effect you. I know this all to well. Let their actions and negativity be your motivation. Let them be your encouragement. Those people are just jealous. When people like that are talking about me and or being mean to me I think hey at least I"m giving someone else a break. I also just love to smile the biggest smile and look them in the eye. I have faith in your abilities to make friends! You have a new one right here! I'm proud to say that I know of your existence now! YOu are one remarkable young lady! Merry Christmas and you have blessed one with your mother and family. Keep that pretty little head held high.

I too Gabbie have been left out and hurt by this. At 38 years old I still am, but I have found that there is a bigger reason behind this. While some days are harder than others everyday is a chance to do something special for someone else. Your heart will show the light on the road GOD has lain for you. I hope you find inspiration in this Christmas. A card will arrive and you may absolutely contact me if a friend is what you need. It is difficult to be different, but all worth remembering have been a little different.

Gabbie, you are blessed! Without even speaking with you or knowing you personally, I can see in your warm, dancing eyes and that gorgeous smile that you have such spirit! What is important to know and remember is that it's the other kids who are losing out on the opportunity to know you and enjoy your friendship. Maybe their hearts will change when they realize your pain. They won't be the only people in your life!!! There will be others who will take time to get to know you and accept you as the beautiful person you are! THEY will be your true friends! Be strong and patient, sweet Gabbie...for God is working right now to put people in place to lift you up and make you feel good about who you are! Blessings to you and your family at this wonderful time of year and in the days and years to come! You have made a new friend here, Gabbie...ME! (((HUGS)))

  • You have a Purpose and a Plan by Amy Malloy, Delaware, Ohio
    Dear Gabbie,
I am a mom with 3 kids, 2 girls that are 14 and 15 and a boy that is 11. I have watched all of my children cry because they have been left out, made fun of, pushed, yelled at, called horrible names, etc..2 of my kids really struggle even today to fit in because of ADHD and processsing delays, speech delays and some other things. Kids can be so mean and it is very hard to understand why they act this way. I tell my kids that usually these kids have pain and sadness of their own and they just don't know what to do with the pain. It doesn't make it right but it still happens, I know.
I want to tell you that you are the cutest, most adorable, beautiful little girl. Always remember that no matter what. You can use your sadness and pain to help other children who go through the same thing you have and trust me there are so many kids out there that feel the exact same way. I think kids everywhere will look up to you Gabbie. You can teach them why it is so important to be kind to everyone. You can teach them how it affects kids and how it made you feel. You are a very strong girl and I know this is something you will be very good at. You get to be a great example of God's love to all of these kids now. It's a big responsibility but a very special job that I think God picked just for YOU because He only gives this kind of special work to the very strongest of HIS children and YOU are one of them! Something great can come out of something so sad when somebody like YOU with YOUR big heart uses it to teach everybody how to love one another. You're going to do such great things with your life, Gabbie. Never give up and always remember, you have a very special purpose in this world.
    Big hugs,
    Amy

    Beautiful Gabbie,
I just read about your story and it made me cry to know the way those kids have made you feel. Then I cried more to see all the love being sent to you. As soon as my daughter, Emilee, who is 12, comes home from school today I will read her your story and she will be sending you at least a card. She has a friend who is treated a lot like you are and Emi has been bullied herself. If you lived in our town, I know the two of you would be great friends.
I am wishing the GREATEST Christmas ever for you and your mom.
Sending lots of love to you both.

Dear Gabbie: I heard about you on TV. I grew up in Indianapolis! I live in Florida now. One time when I was a little girl I had a birthday party and nobody came. I was so sad. So, believe me, I know how you feel. But you don't have to be sad. There are lots of people who love you! You just didn't know it! You have a beautiful Mommy who loves and cares about you more than anything in the world. Those kids at school just don't know how special you are! You have a big beautiful smile that shows what a wonderful little girl you are on the inside, just waiting to share with others. I hope and pray you will feel the love from all of us out here who heard your story. I also wish you will have an amazing Christmas! Your new friend in Florida, Becky

  • My Dear Gabbbie, by Sandra
When I was in school, I was always the "class clown" because that is the only way I could fit in. I received cards and invitations just like all the other kids.
My problem didn't come around until I grew up and had a family of my own. My family has grown away from me and no longer includes me in their plans. I don't get Christmas cards from my family. I haven't received a birthday card from my family for years. So I sympathize with you because I really know how much it hurts to feel left out. It hurts just as bad when you are a grown-up as it does when you are a child.
God bless you and keep you in his warm embrace on this earth so you will know you are never alone.
Much love and compassion to you,
    Sandra

    Gabbie:

I am 53 years old and I have been different all of my life. I guess you could say that I too, had a hard time fitting in at school when I was little and found it difficult to make friends. But know this: Jesus loves you more than you could ever know. Your mother loves you, your family loves you, and I love you too! Feel the love that is coming to you from all of the cards you are receiving and from all of these posts. God made all of us "different". What a dull world it would be if we were all the same! Embrace the person you are and stand tall and proud! You are beautiful and you are special! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!! May all the good things life has to offer come your way. I'll be praying for you and your family. Remember: you are loved!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bigger and Brighter things to Come for You! by Dolores
    Gabbie,

You are a very sweet girl. Just know you are not alone. Kids often don't think about one another's feelings. My daughter has also come home saying she was left out or her feelings were hurt by a mean comment. A couple of times, I had to bite my lip hard. But, in time, and it does happen.. you will see.. things unfold to prove otherwise. For my daughter, her greatest friends and proudest moments of accomplishment have been outside of school. You, too, will experience this and your greatest and proudest moments and accomplishments will be before bigger and more important arenas and your best and loyal friends who truly believe in you and your capabilities will be beyond the limits of school! It is already happening with your Post!!!

Don't ever feel that you are left out just because the other kids get things. I used to think that too when I was little. Now I am older and know that I must never feel left out by the other kids. You just be you and don't worry about them other people. We all think you are beautful!

  • You are Never Alone by Tina
Hi Gabbie, My name is Tina. I have two sons, 15 and 8 years old. My 15 year old has had a hard time with bullies and often feels left out too. I always remind him that school is only a short period of your life and once he goes out into the real world he will be accepted. I believe the same is true for you. Sometimes things that are happening now seem big but as you get older, it will only be a distant memory and you can make your own memories that will be better than you could ever imagine now. Take care. We hope you have a very Merry Christmas!

Hold your head up high knowing that you have friends all over the world ! You are very loved. God bless you.

  • If I had a party I'd invite Gabbie! by Michelle K
I was teased in school and often left out. Once in 5th grade we had to rearrange our desks so we were face-to-face with a buddy. I was the only one in the class without a buddy and for weeks I had to sit off to the side while everyone else sat in the center of the room. I have sympathy for Gabbie and how alone one can feel when left out.
I will be sending this sweet young lady a card! :)

Gabby, many of the greatest people in the world were different. Either in how they acted thought or looked. Its hard at times being young in school because not everyone understands this. Never let others get you down for being different. You are how God wanted you to be for his reasons. The world will love you for that simply some now, some later but always in either case once they do.

Gabbie, I cannot make things better for you NOW, but I want you to remember this. Everything that happens to us, good or bad, helps us become the best US we can be. So, look in that mirror, tell yourself " I LIKE MYSELF. I AM SPECIAL!" Its the truth precious girl!

I am sending you a card with a little note Gabbie! I am all grown up now but I was different too and I spent a lot of time being sad and feeling left out when I was little. What I know now is that my learning disabilities forced me to find my special gifts and that I needed the time and the space that being alone provided for me to explore who I really was and what I was all about. I know it is difficult now but be the best little girl you can be just for today and the love will come. Sometimes it takes a little help from Mom and Dad but that's ok. It's great to have them in your corner. Merry Christmas honey!

    Gabbie,

I was a little older than you when was first bullied. As I started middle school, I didn't fit in. I didn't want to do the things all the other kids were doing. I was very quiet and extremely shy. All I can say is hang in there sweet pea, it does get better. You are a very lucky little lady to have such a loving mother. Be proud of who and what you are.
Kandra, I have a son who is 6 and If your ok with it maybe he and Gabbie could be pen-pals? Just a thought!! May you and your family have a very happy & blessed Christmas season.

  • You're Perfect Because You're Different by Danielle
    Hi Gabbie!
I have 4 kids of my own ages 15, 13, 11, and 4. My 15 year old had some rough years starting around your age. He was different from all the other kids because he didn't like sports really and would rather have been cooking in the kitchen or playing some electronical device. He got picked on and teased and called some very harsh names and words. And what I would tell him everyday was that I was proud to be his mom and I loved him even more because he was different and didn't fit a mold. In fact I have told all of my kids that. So I want you to know that you are SO special because you are different. You are SO special because you have a mom that loves you so very much. And life might seem a little unfair at times now, but as long as you are true to yourself, you are pretty PERFECT in my eyes.
Hope you have a great Holiday!

Gabbie, When I was little like you, I was bullied and I was picked on. Sometimes other kids dont understand how much it hurts when they pick on you or leave you out. But you are a beautiful little girl and God made you extra special because he knew you could handle it. So I am sending a big hug from 1000 miles away and I know you are going to grow up being a very strong person and you are always very loved.

    Dear Gabby,
I didn't get any cards either when I was in 4th grade. That was when I moved to New York and found that I did not fit in and was older than my classmates because I had tested poorly on school entrance tests. I also, spoke in a southern accent which made fitting in dfficult. Things will look up. Just hold onto that hope. When I completed school I joined the Navy and Army and got to travel to lots of places around Europe. Now I am out due to a leg injury and I am living in Massachussetts near Boston. I will begin sending postcards' from Boston and when I go away on vacation. Those are always fun to get. I collected lots of postcards' and those are fun to have and keep. Cheer up and have a great holiday.--Cathy

    Dear Gabby,
It is really amazing to see all the great notes and cards you are getting! I am a teacher in Pennsylvania and saw your amazing smile and bright eyes! It's snowing today here, so I don't have school.
Always pray for others that aren't nice to you. THEY'RE the ones who are lost and alone, not you. I know it's hard to understand, but that is the truth. They need prayers and help from others.
Have an amazing Christmas vacation! Sleep in late, eat some yummy things, take some nice walks, and remember all the great things you have in your life!

    Gabbie,
I am a teacher of special needs in Southern Indiana. One of my former and most successful and inspritational students, is a young man with Nuerobromatosis. He was in National Honor Society in high school and is now a sophomore and Indiana Univ. Southeast.
This student was bullied in elementary, but his positivie attitude and determination to doing his best has helped him become well accepted in college.
The bullies are insecure people who have more of a disability than you. Keep that beautiful smile and show the world that you are becoming a confident young lady.

My heart goes out to you because I understand the frustration and pain you feel. My daughter Kalina is 11 and has Type 1 NF. With it are the learning disabilities, the social issues etc. The cafe latte spots are very pronounced all over her body and face. She is constantly bullied, judged, and mocked (favorite name giraffe) It hurts me so when she comes home and she says people ask her why does she have spots and the only thing I call tell her to say is because she's unique. She is super sweet, amazing and beautiful and it kills me everyday someone hurts her so I feel your pain. I don't love her any less because she says shes "not normal" I tell her she's not normal she's unique. Good luck and many blessings to you and your family.

Hi, Kandra - My nephew suffers from NF as well. I would be most delighted to send a card to sweet Gabbie.
Please send me your mailing address and I will be sure to get something in the mail to her...and maybe I will see if my nephew James would want to be a penpal with Gabbie.
Knowing the strength my brother and sister in law embody in raising James, I can only imagine how amazing you must be!!
